STUDENT OF
COLOR CONFERENCE 2011

E.D.U.C.A.T.E.: Connecting Our Struggles
November 11-13, 2011

“Once social change begins, it cannot be reversed. You cannot uneducate the person who has learned to read. You cannot humiliate the person who feels pride. You cannot oppress the people who are not afraid anymore. We have seen the future, and the future is ours.” - Cesar Chavez

iLL-Literacy

SOCC 2011 Speakers: iLL-Literacy
http://ill-literacy.com/

iLL-Literacy is a band and group of folks with new ideas. These performers/organizers are all UC Alumni who look to "imagineer" the future through their work.

"iLL-Literacy is a creative response. We are what happens when recording artists enter a crumbling record industry and young educators enter a failing school system — we are a group dedicated to reimagining what’s been. For us, that means rethinking how music is produced and distributed, how a live show is performed and experienced, and how creativity is used in the classroom and beyond. The result over the last five years of touring and teaching has been iLL-Literacy’s campaign to unleash Imagination.  We make music, perform and collaborate with students and faculty across the country to build a culture of innovation."

Through music and performance, we build the conditions necessary for imagination to flourish in the classroom.  Through workshops and lectures, we collaborate with student organizers and leaders to use the power of Imagination for social change and more. iLL-Literacy’s music and performances have taken us all the way from the Bay Area to London’s Picadilly, while our workshops and lectures have earned us residencies from Ithaca College to the American University in Paris." - iLL-Literacy

RASIKA MATHUR

SOCC 2011 Speaker: Rasika Mathur
http://rukusavenue.com/.

Rasika Mathur has a BS Degree in Advertising, but rather than using it, she took her 10 years in Advertising, and used it to fund two things: her love for comedy and her passion for truth and self-realization. Her artistic pursuits include stand-up, sketch, improv and musical comedy. She has appeared on Nick Cannon Presents: Wild N’ Out (MTV), The Taqwacores (film),My Name is Earl (NBC), Weeds (Showtime), and Children's Hospital [adult swim].

Rasika is also a certified Kids' Yoga (Kundalini) and Adult Yoga Teacher (Vinyasa) drawing from the Vedanta Philosophy. She has done six years of coursework in self-development, lived through a boatload of eye-opening life experiences on the fringes of Hollywood, and is currently penning several hilarious e-Books, one of which is entitled, "How To Not Be an A**hole in Traffic."

HOODINI

SOCC 2011 Speakers: Hoodini
http://rukusavenue.com/

Hoodini aka HoodiniDidIt aka Hoodeez is a young, up-and-coming emcee from Los Angeles. He combines witty wordplay, lyrical agility, and a keenness for storytelling to add his voice to the collective expression known as Hip-Hop. Born and raised in Southern California, Hoodini shares the experiences of a college-going, urban youth of color living the day-to-day grind in a large city. As a descendant of Panjabi-Sikh immigrants, however, he also articulates the story of life in America from a perspective that has been largely unfamiliar to most, until now.

From writing rhymes on the playground in third grade, to winning rap battles throughout his hometown San Fernando Valley in high school, the 21-year-old emcee has progressed as both a recording artist and a performer. Hoodini has released two independent projects that warranted his local notoriety, and is currently working on an official album through Rukus Avenue Records. This student, activist, and artist has toured extensively throughout California, Vancouver, Toronto, New York, New Jersey, and London. Hoodini has collaborated on records with Humble the Poet, Sikh Knowledge, Mandeep Sethi, Baagi, KinG!, and Scarub of the Living Legends; he has also been featured numerous radio shows, including KPFK Radio and the Bobby Friction Show on BBC UK.
